A new era for women’s rugby league in Ontario begins this weekend when Waterloo host Toronto in the opening game of the inaugural Ontario Women’s Rugby League festival this Saturday at the Norfolk Secondary School.

This groundbreaking competition features teams from Toronto, Waterloo, and Ottawa, all vying for supremacy and, more importantly, a coveted spot on the Ontario Ospreys roster. The Tri-Series, which will run for two weeks, will serve as a crucial selection trial, showcasing the province’s top talent and determining who will represent Ontario at the national championship later this year.

The expansion into a city-based league underscores the burgeoning popularity of women’s rugby league within Ontario. This development provides a structured pathway for athletes to excel, offering them an opportunity to compete at a higher level and gain valuable experience.

For the standout performers, the rewards are significant. Selected players will have the honour of representing the Ontario Ospreys in the national championship later this year, where they will face formidable opposition from Alberta and British Columbia.

Furthermore, the competition serves as a stepping stone for potential selection to the Canadian Ravens, with the ultimate goal of competing at the World Series in October.

All matches will be recorded and available to watch on the Rugby in the GTA YouTube channel.
