B.B. Coke High School has claimed both the boys and girls 2024/25 Rugby League Jamaica National U19 High School 9s titles, after progressing undefeated in both events . The significant triumph marks the return of the E.A. Ledgister Trophy to its original home after a three-year absence.
Seven male and three female high school teams participated in the competition. The B.B. Coke Spitfire male team demonstrated exceptional form throughout the preliminary rounds, registering wins against Enid Bennett High, Spanish Town High, and St. George’s College to secure their place in the semi finals.
A notable victory against Calabar High in the semi finals marked the first time in eight years that a Spitfire team had overcome Calabar in the knockout stage. This win propelled them into the final against Jose Marti Technical High, who had earlier defeated Spanish Town High in their respective semifinal.
The championship final proved to be a tightly contested affair. After regulation time and 18 minutes of extra time, the score remained locked at 8-8, necessitating a sudden death period. With neither team able to break the deadlock after five minutes, the championship was decided by a dramatic drop-kick shootout. B.B. Coke’s captain, Tyrone Davidson, along with tournament MVP Richard Glennie and prop Kaje Witter, successfully converted their three attempts, securing the coveted title for their school.
Adding to B.B. Coke’s success, the B.B. Coke Spitfire Ladies retained their dominance in the 9s Championship, winning the Nassandra Miller Trophy for the third consecutive year. Victories over Jose Marti Technical and Norman Manley High solidified their position as champions.:
